Abstract
The reversed gastric tube operation has been performed in fifty-three patients during the past fifteen years. The technic and results are reported in detail. The indications for the operation are presented for both benign and malignant lesions. The reversed gastric tube operation is a physiologic method of esophageal replacement. Patients who have had total esophagoplasty have been able to eat normally for as long as thirteen years. Morbidity and mortality have been satisfactorily low. Long-term follow-up study indicates that patients continue to eat in a normal manner and those having had concomitant laryngectomy can develop “esophageal” voice.Although other organs can be replaced by transplantation, replacement of the esophagus using the patient's own stomach avoids the immunity reactions that cause rejection of transplants. Furthermore, the reversed gastric tube, when used in children, grows at a normal rate.
